Faculty

Recognized for excellence throughout the world, the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science’s faculty and researchers educate women and men for careers in leadership and innovation who go on to establish successful careers in engineering, business, law, medicine and related fields. Our faculty are leaders in their fields and expand the base of engineering knowledge through research, technology transfer and creation of solutions to 21st century problems.

More than 146 academic faculty, 21 instructional faculty, 14 research faculty, and 85 research professionals who are involved in education and research in the U.Va. Engineering School. Each brings a substantial measure of education, research and service to the School and many are recognized world-wide through awards, endowed professorships and memberships in professional societies and in the National Academy of Engineering.

Faculty Honors and Awards

National Academy of Engineering
The National Academy of Engineering’s mission is to promote the technological welfare of the nation by marshaling the knowledge and insights of eminent members of the engineering profession. Election to NAE is the highest honor afforded in the engineering field. The Engineering School has 11 faculty who are NAE members, including Professor William Wulf, who served as president of NAE for a decade.

Endowed Professorships
An endowed chair is one of the greatest honors an institution can bestow on its faculty. Combining prestige and financial rewards, recognize faculty excellence in research, scholarship and leadership and greatly enhance the reputation. The Engineering School has 33 endowed professorships established with support of individuals, corporations and foundations.

Society Fellows
Our faculty are honored with election to over 35 professional societies, including the National Academy of Engineering (13), American Physical Society (APS) (8), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) (9), Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) (16), Institute of Physics (IOP) (3), and Biomedical Engineering Society (4).

NSF Career Awards
The National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early CAREER Development program recognizes and supports the activities of teacher scholars, early in their careers, deemed likely to be academic leaders of the 21st century. Since 1995, 37 of our faculty have received Early CAREER awards.
